RANCHO DELUXE
DECEMBER 8 - 9. 2012

The core idea behind the Rancho Deluxe Project is to create a collaboration of some of the best design and construction talent available in the Ann Arbor area to transform an abandoned, mid-century modern home into a model for 21st century design, construction, and energy efficiency. With targets of net zero site energy usage and LEED® Platinum certification, the final result of the collaborative work will set an example of what can and should be done with all homes. Not only will it be the residence for The Hickman Family it will also become the home offices and studio of Urban Ashes.
The highlights of this collaborative effort are:
ENERGY USE:
- Net zero site energy obtained from an 8kW solar panel system, geo-thermal heating and cooling as well as intensive sealing/insulation of building envelop
- Cutting egde occupancy sensors and smart system monitoring controls
- Use of materials and landscaping to minimize heat island effects
MATERIAL USE:
- Locally sourced and manufactured products whenever possible with a focus on American-made products
- Reusing or repurposing as much of the site materials as possible, minimizing waste to landfill
- Non-toxic, petroleum free materials and finishes
LAND USE:
- In-ground water collection to keep all storm water runoff on site.
- Restoration and planting of drought-tolerant, low water-use native plants
- Hardscapes created with concrete salvaged during renovation and with other products reclaimed locally
- Preservation of historic and cultural site features
- Removal of invasive, non-native species
- Creation of a sustainable maintenance and stewardship plan including controlled burning for meadow plantings
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- Reducing impact on city storm water system
- Net-zero site energy
- Private homeowner investment in solar panels to benefit Ann Arbor Solar Cities Initiative
- Educate and promote both industry and public on the process of making existing structures lessen their impact on the environment
